A joint weekend with CSS–The Netherlands
Event Overview
Join Common Sense Society–Hungary and Common Sense Society–The Netherlands on October 14-16 for a critical interrogation of Hungary and the credentials of the conservative political alternative this country has become associated with. To what extent can Hungary serve as an example?
In the past decade, Hungary has seen an era of conservative revival that has been both touted for creating a counter narrative to mainstream Western progressivism, but it has also been criticized on classical liberal and often on classical conservative grounds. What is the Hungarian understanding of conservatism, and what are the historical, social, economic, and geopolitical underpinnings of it? What lessons do these developments hold for people of other nations?
This weekend-long program will bring together members of the Dutch and Hungarian Common Sense national branches in Budapest. The program will include meetings with special guests from both countries as well as opportunities for informal mingling of members. The experience will be enriched by cultural programs, like visits to the Parliament and historical walking tours in the city.

What: Panel discussion on “Hungary: Illiberal or social conservative?”

What: Lecture and discussion on “Liberty, Independence and National Identity—What Hungarians learned from their history”
Speaker: Mr. Tamás Révész, historian and postdoctoral research fellow, Institute of History in Budapest; member of the Trianon100 research group
